The Priority of Prayer
I am presently 64 years old, and the older I get, the more I am starting to understand the importance of prayer. Another way to make Holy Spirit feel welcome in our lives and our homes is to pray ANYTIME, ANYWHERE, WITH ANYONE.
- Pray with your husband.
- Between husbands and wives, we sometimes get into complaining or criticizing others in our conversations (speaking of myself and my husband here). My husband and I have realized that when we recognize a shortcoming in others, it is an opportunity for us to go right there and then into prayer for that person, leader, or situation. We often do this on our walks. James 5:16, “Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed.”
- Pray with your children.
- When your children come to you with a crisis, a booboo, a need, pray about it together- right then. This also teaches them to pray. When our children and I were in the car and we heard an ambulance, we would pray for the people that were hurt, that God would comfort them, and that they would cry out to God in their time of need. Psalm 107:19, “Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, And He saved them out of their distresses.”
- Pray at mealtime.
- Take time at meals to thank God for His blessing of the meal and for the blessings of your day. Have you ever wondered why God created us such that we need to eat a few times a day (well, most of us!)? Maybe this is a built-in three-times-a-day reminder to connect with God. Make meal-time prayer a habit, and even little ones will remind you if you forget to pray- our grandchildren do!
- Pray at bedtime.
- Pray with your children at bedtime. One of our children wanted to pray for every member of our extended family every night-this was around 36 people! To be honest, it was a bit annoying, but I did it with her. As a young adult, this child is now an intercessor.
By incorporating prayer into our everyday lives, we acknowledge our need for God. Remember one thing Holy Spirit LIKES is our weakness. Why? Romans 8:26 New AmericanStandard Bible says:
And in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness…
Holy Spirit is the Helper, so He loves to help! When we ask for His help, it allows Him to share His strength with us. We just need to ask. Prayer is how we ask for Holy Spirit’s help.
So, moms, remember that
ASKING FOR HOLY SPIRIT’S HELP BRINGS HIS PRESENCE INTO OUR HOME.
In His Love,
Suzanne
